B747-400BDSF  - The Long-Haul Freighter

Since 1991 Bedek' Aircraft Division has specialized in B747 Modifications, Upgrading and Conversions. Indeed, Bedek is one of the few centers which has developed FAA-approved Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) to meet the increased demand for freighter aircraft. With more than 40 747-200 conversions, Bedek is the largest conversion center outside the US for the B747-200 Pax and Combi conversions to Special Freighter (SF). Bedek is an acknowledged world leader, converting 747-200 for major airlines around the globe, among them are Lufthansa, UPS, Air France, Alitalia, Atlas Air.

The 747-200 fleet is aging and there are less suitable candidates for conversion (the last two converted for Northwest Airline by Bedek in 2005). The B747-400SF is the ideal successor to the B747-200F/SF.  Operated by a crew of two, the B747-400SF is equipped with fuel-efficient engines and cumulative margin EPNdB over Stage III. Quite a number of the 500-passenger B747-400-fleet is approaching the "right age" for conversion. 

Bedek launched the 747-400BDSF in 2004. This program is attracting quite a few customers who have the vision of the potential market for this freighter

Aircraft and Programs Divisions

Bedek is offering two types of 747- 400 conversions programs:

• B747-400  Combi-to-BDSF - STC by CAAI, FAA, EASA, CAAC, ROCCAA and KCASA
• B747-400  Pax-to-BDSF - STC by CAAI, FAA, EASA, CAAC, ROCCAA and KCASA

Both STCs were received in 2006.

In 2003, Israel Aircraft Industries Ltd teamed with Eolia Ltd, (a new specialist investment company formed to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the aerospace sector), to create a joint venture company based in Cyprus, PSF Conversions LLP. The specific purpose of PSF Conversions is to bring to the market a B747-400 Pax and Combi converted to BDSF. 

PSF Conversions LLP will own the Supplemental Type Certificates and is the primary interface with customers in relation to the allocation of conversions slots. The company plans to operate seven simultaneous conversions in 'slots' prepared for in Israel and abroad.

The first and the second conversions,  Combi-to-BDSF (owned by Guggenheim Aviation Partner and is operated by Air China). The first prototype - Pax-to-BDSF (owned by Rabobank and will be operated by Air Atlanta Iceland)  was certified  in the third  quarter of 2006.

Bedek's order book for 747-400 conversions is quite impressive. Among the customers are Guggenheim, Rabobank, GECAS, Atlas Air, Eva Air, Asiana,  Avion and Aircastle,

B747-400 Conversion Overview and Features:

• Removal of all passenger equipment (attendant stations, seats, galley and lavatories, bins & lining)
• Systems Modifications - control cables, water/waste drain, system to accommodate deletion of existing lavatories and installation of a new 15U lavatory.
• Fully Lined Main Deck Cargo Compartment similar  to -400F
• Installation of Main Deck -200SF Cargo Door / surround structure
• Modification of ECS and oxygen
• Installation of new 1-min-Smoke-Detection systems. All cargo compartments are Class E
• Strengthening Main Deck and installation of 30-Pallet Cargo Handling systems similar to 747-200SF
• Installation of forward Rigid Barrier
• Upper Deck modification  to enable 10ft containers: Removal of Upper Deck beams and installing tension ties. Reinforcing frames, installing crown net & re-routing flight control cables  
• Reconfiguration of systems
• Installation of honeycomb side panels and ceiling
