IAI’s responsibility under the T-38 program was for the development and integration of the T-38 upgraded avionics system and the supply of avionics subsystems. In addition, in 2015 IAI was awarded the contract for the new T-38 Mission Computer which will support the continued operation of the T-38 aircraft beyond 2030. IAI’s Aviation Group also supplies the T-38 replacement wings under a contract with the United States Air Force.
OVERVIEW
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) was chosen by Boeing as its prime subcontractor for the United States Air Force (USAF) T-38 Talon upgrade avionics program, in which over 450 T-38 aircraft have been upgraded. The upgrade has enabled the USAF to continue to operate the T-38 in the F-16 Fighting Falcon lead-in trainer role.
HIGHLIGHTS
- IAI was chosen by Boeing as its prime subcontractor for the USAF T-38 Talon upgrade avionics program.
- The USAF program award was based on IAI’s extensive F-5 upgrade experience.
Values & Benefits
The USAF program award was based on IAI’s extensive Northrop F-5 upgrade experience (from which the T-38 is derived) and “Best Value” criteria (performance, risk, and cost). The upgraded USAF T-38’s reconfigured cockpit layout and avionics systems replicate the operation of advanced fighter aircraft to enhance the effectiveness and safety of pilot training.
The upgraded centralized avionics architecture uses mature and highly reliable avionics, displays, sensors and subsystems to meet the trainer aircraft requirements. The T-38 program further reinforced IAI’s reputation as a leader in the field of aircraft upgrades and pilot training systems.
