Combat-Proven, Future-Ready Radar Solutions
Modern naval operations are increasingly challenged by sophisticated and fast-evolving threats. These include low-signature manned and unmanned aerial systems, long-range cruise missiles, and hypersonic anti-ship weapons.
Hypersonic missiles present a particularly critical challenge due to their high velocity and maneuverability, which limit reaction time and complicate interception. Additionally, adversaries can now launch coordinated attacks from beyond the radar horizon, increasing the risk of saturating shipborne defense systems.
What is a Naval AESA Radar?
A naval Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar is a multifunction sensor system that enables real-time detection, tracking, and engagement of aerial threats such as missiles and UAVs.
By delivering continuous situational awareness and rapid response capability, AESA radars are essential components of modern naval air and missile defense architectures.
MF-STAR and ALPHA: Advanced AESA Radar Systems
IAI ELTA’s MF-STAR and ALPHA radars are combat-proven, shipborne multifunction systems designed for detection, tracking, and engagement of advanced threats.
These fully digital AESA radars incorporate:
- Multi-beam operation for simultaneous target handling
- Multi-mission capability (surveillance, tracking, fire control)
- Advanced ECCM (Electronic Counter-Countermeasure) performance
They are optimized for early detection and precision interception of threats including UAVs, cruise missiles, and hypersonic weapons.
AESA Technology Advantage in Naval Operations
MF-STAR and ALPHA utilize wideband AESA (Active Electronic Scanning/Staring Array) technology developed by IAI ELTA. Compared to conventional radar systems, AESA offers:
- Higher receiver sensitivity
- Increased Effective Radiated Power (ERP)
- Simultaneous narrow-beam transmission and reception
- Efficient tracking of multiple targets in dense threat environments
These capabilities enable superior performance in both open-ocean (blue water) and coastal (littoral) operational scenarios.

Long-Range Surveillance and Ballistic Missile Support
As long-range multifunction radar systems, MF-STAR and ALPHA provide:
- Area and local air defense
- Continuous surveillance and target tracking
- Weapon guidance and fire-control support
Extended-range configurations support detection and tracking of tactical ballistic missiles, enhancing overall missile defense capability. Their performance led to selection by the German Navy for F124 Air Defense Frigates.

Modular Architecture and Lifecycle Efficiency
Both radar systems feature a modular and scalable design that supports high levels of automation and operational flexibility. Minimal operator input is required due to advanced processing and Built-In Test (BIT) capabilities.
The use of modular components simplifies maintenance and enhances system availability while reducing long-term operational costs.
TRG-Based Scalable Radar Design
MF-STAR and ALPHA are built around proprietary Transmit/Receive Module Groups (TRGs), which serve as scalable performance units.
Each TRG includes:
- S-band transmit/receive channels
- GaN-based Solid State Amplifier (SSA) technology
- Fully digital signal processing
This architecture enables adaptation to different ship classes, mission requirements, and budget constraints. Shared TRG design across both systems improves logistics efficiency and reduces Life Cycle Cost (LCC).
MF-STAR Radar Configuration
MF-STAR employs four fixed, angled antenna panels to provide continuous 360° coverage while maintaining a reduced radar signature.
Configurations are available for:
- Frigates and large surface combatants
- Corvettes and smaller naval platforms
Detection range scales according to array size, ensuring optimized performance for each platform class.
ALPHA Radar: Compact and Flexible Solution
The ALPHA radar system uses a single rotating antenna mounted on a pedestal to achieve full 360° coverage. It integrates IFF and navigation functions within a compact design.
Key advantages include:
- Reduced size, weight, and cost
- High operational performance
- Upgrade capability through additional TRG modules
Global Deployment and Operational Maturity
IAI ELTA’s radar family forms a central component of the Israel Navy’s air defense architecture and is deployed – or being integrated – on over 30 naval platforms worldwide.
While many competing AESA radars remain in early development stages, MF-STAR represents a mature, combat-proven third-generation system with extensive operational validation.
