IAI is not only a pioneer in Air Defence Systems but also in Offensive Systems. The BARAK MX was developed in close cooperation with IAI’s in-house Strike Systems and Loitering Munitions divisions, combining expertise across domains to deliver an integrated capability that effectively counters evolving enemy threats.
OVERVIEW
The Naval Air Defence Mission has evolved from Point Defence (own-ship defence) to Area Defence, covering Critical Facilities, Amphibious Operations, and Task Force Protection. Modern naval threats are far more diverse, requiring a flexible and capable air defence system to counter sea-skimming missiles (high speed, low RCS, low flying), fighter jets (long range, low RCS), and various types of UAS (low speed, low RCS). Given that shipboard space and resources are limited, an integrated system must offer high performance within a small footprint. IAI’s Naval BARAK MX is an end-to-end air defence solution providing the optimal balance between radar, weapon control system, and interceptor, while maintaining a minimal deck footprint.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Flexible configuration for naval and land use
- Provides a comprehensive solution for multiple simultaneous aerial threats from different sources and different ranges.
- Multi-sensor capabilities with integrated Battle Management.
- Three available interceptors for different ranges all with an active RF seeker
- Advanced fully digital radar
- Software based, future adaptable system
Values & Benefits
Unlike air-to-air missiles converted for surface-to-air use, BARAK MX interceptors were purpose-built for naval defence, optimized in size and diameter beyond airborne missile constraints. This gives BARAK MX a significant edge with a larger Active RF Seeker antenna, a larger warhead with higher lethality, and an energetic dual pulse rocket motor that ensures superior end-game maneuverability.
The BARAK MX system is built around four core interceptors: BARAK ER (150 km, dual pulse rocket motor + booster), BARAK LR (70 km, dual pulse rocket motor), BARAK MR (35 km, single pulse rocket motor), and BARAK SR (15 km range). Sharing common components, these interceptors engage threats from 2 km to 150 km, delivering flexible and layered protection for naval missions.
IAI (Israel Aerospace Industries) is the National House of Israel’s Strategic Missile Defence System, responsible for the “Arrow” Anti-Ballistic Missile Defence System that protects Israel’s skies and has been selected by Germany as part of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). Leveraging extensive experience in multi-layer air and missile defence, BARAK MX provides medium to extended-range protection and is operational across four continents.
