As an integral part of the Trophy active protection system (APS) deployed by several armies worldwide, including the IDF, WindGuard is extensively combat proven.
OVERVIEW
Combat vehicle crews must have the ability to counter a range of dangerous threats originating from different directions and ranges. They must respond quickly, accurately and with suitable effectors. Some threats must be countered immediately using active protection systems, while others may be dealt with using the vehicle’s weapons systems such as a tank’s main armament or an AFV’s Remote Weapons Station.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Full distributed phased-array 3D radar
- Automatic high accuracy threat detection, tracking, and identification
- High detection probability for all airborne anti-tank munitions
- Mature, operationally proven system
- Continually improved based on actual combat experience
Values & Benefits
IAI ELTA Systems’ ELM-2133 WindGuard self-protection radar, an armored and distributed phased-array Pulse Doppler S-Band radar, is at the heart of this critical defensive capability. Designed to automatically detect, classify and track threats such as Anti-Tank Rockets (ATRs), Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs), and tank rounds aimed at the protected platform, the radar calculates the Time-To-Impact (TTI) and if the protected platform is in danger, automatically activates protective systems. WindGuard can be operated continuously, or triggered by passive threat detection from IAI’s ELO-5220 EO sensor.
Upon detection and identification of a potential threat, the radar also delivers an early warning to the crew and pinpoints the source of fire.
