Innovation in Combat: How Israel’s Defense Industries and the IDF Adapt in Real Time

In wartime, the connection between Israel’s defense industries and the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) becomes more than cooperation – it becomes a real-time engine of operational adaptation, technological improvement, and lifesaving performance.

Much has already been said and written about the close cooperation between Israel’s defense industries and the IDF. But in wartime, that partnership – working shoulder to shoulder – takes on real and immediate meaning.

Engineers who serve in reserve duty in operational units return to their offices and laboratories and work on upgrading the very systems they operate and maintain in the IDF. Operations personnel and system operators conduct joint debriefs with industry representatives, accelerating the development of solutions to operational gaps – all in real time, in the midst of combat.

This level of cooperation is virtually unmatched anywhere else in the world. It is uniquely Israeli: a powerful synergy between those who operate systems in the field and those who develop them. Operation Roaring Lion, the campaign against Iran, has provided striking examples of this unique ecosystem in action, particularly in the air defense domain.

What makes this model especially powerful is its ability to dramatically shorten the loop between battlefield learning and system improvement. Operational challenges are identified in real time, translated almost immediately into technical insight, and then fed back into upgrades, patches, and adjustments that can return to the field at remarkable speed. This makes the value of the partnership even greater than the familiar label of “combat proven.” These are not only systems validated in combat – but they are also systems refined through combat, continuously adapted to meet emerging threats with greater precision and relevance.

Real-Time Solutions Under Fire

Lt. Col. S., commander of the newly re-formed tactical air defense battalion, describes the dialogue with the defense industries, in an interview with the IDF’s official magazine Bamhane:

“It is a privilege and a source of pride to be a citizen of the State of Israel, knowing that we have blue-and-white (Israeli) defense industries. One of the lessons of the war is that we need to look inward and rely on blue-and-white capabilities alone. We work with several companies. Their people are available to us 24/7, fully attentive, constantly offering recommendations on operational readiness and system employment. We conduct thorough debriefs and return to them with lessons learned. We raised issues from deployments in the south in real time, and they told us, ‘We can’t believe the system is managing to do that.’ Because of this close partnership, the pace of improvement and progress is far faster and far more meaningful. Some of the industry personnel are also serving as reservists in my unit during combat.”

Maj. S., commander of an Arrow battery, also points to the value of this close collaboration:

“There is a major advantage in having industry personnel work closely alongside us. Some of them are even our reservists. When an industry engineer sits with us during training, sees technical gaps firsthand, and then works through the night at the company, they can return

the next day with a software patch or system add-on that addresses those gaps. Even during the fighting, there was a malfunction in one of the components. They worked on it all night and are implementing technical changes right now, while we are still in combat. You can see the industry and the field working hand in hand. Everyone is fully committed and understands the magnitude of the moment.”

Lt. S., a maintenance officer in one of the Arrow batteries, says that since Operation “Rising Lion” in June 2025, several major software and version updates have been carried out across the different systems.

“All the industry personnel working with us served here in the military, and some still serve here in the reserves. They are real centers of knowledge, and they know how to solve problems for us. We experienced several malfunctions, and they were able to provide answers on the spot. Some of the updates and upgrades came directly from the debriefs we conducted. Some were implemented in preparation for combat, and some while the fighting was already underway.”

In battle, victory is shaped not only on the battlefield, but also in the laboratories, production lines, and overnight troubleshooting sessions that keep critical systems one step ahead of the threat. This war has made a few things very clear:

  • Close cooperation between operators and developers shortens the path from operational challenge to technical solution
  • Real-time feedback from the battlefield enables faster, more accurate system updates
  • This creates a capability that is not only combat proven, but continuously combat-adapted
  • When fighters in the field and engineers on the home front move as one, innovation becomes operational power – and that power saves lives

This is not just a story about advanced technology or operational superiority – it is a story about people, commitment, and unmatched speed of adaptation. When the line between the battlefield and the lab disappears, and fighters and engineers operate as one, a unique advantage emerges – the ability to evolve during combat. This is the true power of Israeli innovation: not only to overcome today’s challenges, but to already be adapting to tomorrow’s threats.
